As a florist and stylist, Katie Cooper has been involved in plenty of Perth weddings but when it came to planning her own, she and fiancee Brent were very clear on what they wanted - family and close friends in a simple but stylish soiree in mum's front yard.
I've known Katie's mother Judi for quite a few years and in more recent years, had the opportunity to get to know and work with her talented daughter. So it was no surprise to me that she decided to take on yet another awesome project - her own wedding.
Being a marriage celebrant has to be one of the nicest gigs around. I get to craft a ceremony that reflects who you are as a couple, help you write your own vows and ultimately pronouce you 'husband and wife'. Performing a ceremony for people you know, especially someone from this wonderful wedding industry of ours, brings with it just a little smidge of additional excitement and is a special privilege indeed.
I met up with Katie and Brent not much more than a month before the big day. They are such a gorgeous couple, inside and out, and are so in love with each other and their beautiful son Beau. They became engaged overseas and made the decision to have a relaxed, casual and elegant summer soiree as their engagement party. An engagement party that became a wedding...
I joined the party as a guest (not difficult to do when you know people) and then at an appropriate time, Katie and Brent disappeared for a while to 'freshen up'. The live music continued and then the groom reappeared and I'm fairly sure the guests started to work out what was about to happen. I welcomed everyone to the party and then explained that Katie and Brent had decided they wanted the rest of their lives together as husband and wife to start right now...
There is something so intimate about a garden wedding. I had no need for a microphone as everyone was gathered around in a circle, under the big old tree, with Brent's parents on my left and Katie's mother on my right. Some chairs had been provided for the grandparents but other than that there were no obvious formalities and everyone was very much a part of this very special ceremony. Katie joined us on the arm of her mother Judi, with son Beau carrying a sign saying 'Daddy, here comes your bride' and our hearts were full of love for these two about to become husband and wife.
'Brent, from the day that I first met you, I just knew you were my 'one'.
Our relationship was a whirlwind of happiness.
You 'ticked all my boxes' and made me feel like never before.
Since then, I've fallen in love with you again and again, countless times, without reservation.
You have provided me with life's greatest gifts in your love, a stunning home together and our beautiful son and I am so lucky to be standing here today becoming your wife...
Today Brent, our life together as husband and wife begins and I, for one, just can't wait.'
Katie and Brent's wedding was truly handcrafted - each and every part of it. In fact, Katie was still up a ladder putting the final touches on her stunning blooms and decorations when the first guests arrived (early) so it was lovely to see them both relax and be present in the moment.
Congratulations to you both and your wonderful families. It was an honour and a pleasure to be such a significant part of your special day.
